Self-proclaimed Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko flew to Russia to meet with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, Belarusian state media reported on June 26.

Minsk state propaganda said the leaders will discuss “key agenda items.”

Lukashenko’s trip came a day after he told Russia’s ambassador in Minsk, Boris Gryzlov, “not to drag” Belarus into the war in Ukraine.

The visit followed an ultimatum from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy demanding that Belarus dismantle relay stations on its territory that help guide Russian drone strikes on Ukraine. On June 19, Zelenskyy gave Lukashenko seven days to remove the relay equipment, saying, “If he doesn’t, we will.”

On June 24, Zelenskyy said the relay stations in Belarus had stopped operating as of June 22 but added it was still unclear whether Lukashenko’s regime had actually dismantled the equipment.

After a June 25 report from Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service, Zelenskyy said Belarus was completing construction of roads and storage facilities for ammunition and fuel along the border with Ukraine.

“Belarus knows what steps are needed from its side for peace; the construction of border infrastructure for aggression by Belarus must be stopped,” he said.
