Following a highly disputed presidential election in Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro's regime has intensified its crackdown on political opposition and foreign nationals. The election, held on July 28, 2024, was marred by allegations of fraud, with opposition leader Edmundo González claiming victory despite the official results declaring Maduro the winner.
After Venezuela’s Supreme Court upheld Maduro’s presidency, González fled to Spain to avoid persecution, and authorities later placed a $100,000 bounty on his capture.
In this context, the Venezuelan government has now turned its attention to foreign nationals, making new arrests under controversial claims.
"Two U.S. citizens, two Colombians, and three Ukrainians were arrested," Maduro claimed.
"The suspects allegedly planned attacks on Vice President and Petroleum Minister Delcy Rodríguez, as well as other state officials and key figures of the so-called 'Bolivarian Revolution.'"
Maduro also accused the Argentine government of being involved in a plot to assassinate Rodríguez, calling it part of an "international fascist aggression" against Venezuela.
"This 'group of mercenaries' was linked to 125 individuals from 25 different nationalities who were previously arrested in November and December 2024," the dictator added.
