Following failures, Russia ‘recalibrates’ its air defense systems around Moscow

In an apparent effort to detect and engage the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), Russian SA-22 air defense systems around Moscow have been positioned on elevated towers and ramps since at least early Sept. 2023.

It is likely also intended as a high-profile reassurance to the public that the authorities have taken measures to bring the threat under control.

Moscow has seen frequently attacked with drones throughout Summer 2023, with several reports of SA-5 GAMMON missiles – potentially modified Ukrainian versions of the Soviet S-200 anti-aircraft missiles – hitting targets across Russia.

The failure of Russia’s air defense system effectiveness is a likely cause of the recent “recalibration.”

Following strikes against Engels and Ryazan air bases in Dec. 2022, Russia also positioned SA-22 on the roofs of official buildings in Moscow.

A drone allegedly flying towards Moscow was shot down in the Ramensky municipal district of Russia on Sept. 7.

One drone had been destroyed over Russian Kaluga Oblast, claimed Russian Ministry of Defense on Sept. 5.
