Man detained after deadly parcel explosion at Nova Post facility in Kyiv

According to investigators, the package contained fragmentation munitions, which are prohibited from being shipped through postal services. The sender was identified as a 35-year-old native of Donetsk Oblast currently living in Zaporizhzhia.
Law enforcement officials said the suspect illegally obtained the munitions and sent them to an acquaintance in Kyiv, disregarding safety regulations. The package detonated while being unloaded at a Nova Poshta sorting facility.
The suspect was detained shortly afterward at his residence in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. Investigators said his mobile phone contained information about the contents of the package and details of its shipment.
He has been charged under Part 1 of Article 263 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code, which covers the illegal handling of weapons, ammunition, or explosives. The offense carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison.
A powerful explosion occurred at a Nova Poshta sorting center in Kyiv on June 5, killing a 59-year-old company employee and injuring two others.
Prosecutors initially classified the incident as a terrorist act while investigators worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
