Russia rains drones and missiles on Ukraine’s power grid, triggers blackouts

Russian forces carried out another overnight drone attack on Ukraine followed by a massive missile attack launched by a group of Russian Tu-95MS bombers and from the Black Sea early on Jan. 15, the Air Force reported.

Initial social media posts from local authorities and numerous eyewitnesses indicate that western Ukraine was the primary target of the attack, with missiles seen flying over central and southern regions of the country and the Carpathian Mountains toward Khmelnytskyi, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, and Lviv oblasts.

According to Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi, the main target of the attack was the power grid.

The Polish Air Force scrambled fighter jets in response to the Russian attack on Ukraine.

The National Energy Company Ukrenergo introduced emergency power cuts in response to Russian strikes on the power grid, Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko wrote on Facebook.

The air raid alert was canceled at 8:15 a.m. EET in all Ukrainian oblasts except Zaporizhzhya.
