Student from Donetsk Oblast dies in Russia’s missile strike on Dnipro

The victim was identified as Illia Bezbozhnyi, the university said. He had moved to Dnipro from Myrnohrad in Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast and was a second-year student in software engineering at the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Information Technologies.

“The enemy first took the family’s home, and now their son,” the university said, expressing condolences to his relatives and friends.

Dnipro National University named after Oles Honchar said students reported the blast occurred almost simultaneously with the air raid alert. Some managed to reach the dormitory shelter, while others did not have time to react.

“Rescuers organized the evacuation of dormitory residents, and lecturers moved them to a smart shelter in the main building, where they were able to recover somewhat. Work at the damaged building continued until night. Accompanied by emergency service specialists, students entered their rooms in small groups to retrieve documents, belongings and rescue their frightened pets,” the university said.

Residents were also helped to arrange relocation and replace destroyed documents.

Russia’s May 3 attack on Dnipro

On May 3, Russia attacked Dnipro with five guided air-launched missiles. Yurii Ihnat, head of communications for Ukraine’s Air Force Command, told Ukrainska Pravda that air defenses intercepted four missiles, but one struck a dormitory.

One person was killed and 11 were injured. In addition to the dormitory, the strike damaged college and university buildings, a high-rise apartment block, up to 10 private homes, cars, a public transport stop and a passing trolleybus. Passengers survived, Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov said.
