Ukrainian border guards destroy Russian cruise missile with machine gun fire

A mobile fire unit of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine shot down a Russian cruise missile heading toward Kyiv using a machine gun overnight, the agency announced on Aug. 20, publishing photos of the missile wreckage.

According to the border agency, the cruise missile was intercepted over Kyiv Oblast and crashed outside populated areas, leaving a massive crater in an open field.

The Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that air defense units intercepted 39 of 44 cruise missiles launched by Russian forces during the overnight assault.

Aug. 20 mass Russian attack

Overnight into Aug. 20, Russian forces launched a massive combined attack against Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast utilizing dozens of ballistic missiles, strike drones, and Kalibr cruise missiles.

Multiple explosions shook the capital, killing 14 people and injuring 40+ others, with extensive fires breaking out across Kyiv and surrounding districts.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that as of 8 a.m.:

  • In Darnytskyi District, non-residential and warehouse facilities sustained damage.

  • In Svyatoshynskyi District, structures within a non-residential area were destroyed, and warehouse buildings caught fire.

  • In Solomyanskyi District, where at least seven people were killed, strikes destroyed the upper levels of a nine-story residential apartment building, sparking a blaze that was subsequently extinguished. Windows in four nearby residential buildings were shattered. Debris also ignited the upper floors of a four-story building at a separate address. Additionally, a school and a children's hospital were damaged, with shattered windows and burning vehicles on the clinic's grounds. Garages were also damaged.

  • In Brovary District of Kyiv Oblast, one person was killed and seven others were injured.

Russian drone strikes hit a border checkpoint on the Moldovan border in Odesa Oblast and targeted gas infrastructure in Chernihiv Oblast.
