This conclusion was made following a meeting between Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in the Russian capital.
Putin claimed then that Russia’s position on the Israel–Iran conflict is well known and that the Russian Foreign Ministry had expressed concern at the UN Security Council. He also called the U.S. strikes on Iran “unprovoked and unjustified,” and alleged that Russia was making efforts to assist the Iranian people.
Araghchi, in turn, thanked Moscow for its strong condemnation of the attacks on Iran and said that Tehran is in ongoing consultation with Russia on global security matters.
However, citing Reuters sources, ISW analysts noted that Iran remains unimpressed with Russia’s support and wants Putin to do more to help Tehran against Israel and the United States. Reuters also reported that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei sent Araghchi to Moscow with a letter requesting additional assistance from Russia.
ISW experts believe Russia’s ability to provide direct support to Iran is constrained by its ongoing war against Ukraine. Moscow has likely accepted that, for now, its involvement will be limited to diplomatic initiatives.
Iran–Israel ceasefire
On June 23, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Iran had reached a full ceasefire agreement.
The parties supposedly agreed on a phased cessation of hostilities, with Iran stopping its attacks first, and Israel joining the truce 12 hours later. Full cessation of warfare is expected within 24 hours.
Axios clarified that the ceasefire will take effect at 12:00 a.m. Eastern Time (7:00 a.m. Kyiv time) on June 24. Both Israel and Iran are expected to complete their current military operations by then.
Trump said that Iran will initiate the 12-hour ceasefire, followed by Israel, and that the end of the war will be officially declared 24 hours later.
According to CNN, Qatar helped mediate the ceasefire deal between Iran and Israel.
On June 24, Trump confirmed that the ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel had entered into force.
