NATO will shoot down Russian aircraft that violate the airspace of alliance members if they pose a threat, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said in an interview with Fox News on Oct. 22.
He added that if Russian aircraft do not pose a threat, they will instead be intercepted and escorted out of NATO airspace.
Commenting on recent incidents involving Russian fighter jets and drones entering NATO territory, Rutte said the alliance had responded “exactly as it should.”
“We have trained and prepared for this,” he said.
Rutte also expressed confidence in U.S. President Donald Trump’s diplomatic efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, calling the American leader “a true peacemaker.”
