Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that no talks between Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump are currently planned, Russia's Interfax news agency reported on Oct. 22.

He also said such a conversation could be arranged "fairly quickly."

Peskov also claimed that Putin and Trump "constantly assure each other of their readiness to talk at a moment's notice, at any time."

On Oct. 9, U.S. President Donald Trump agreed during a phone call with Vladimir Putin to supply hundreds of thousands of tons of Russian diesel fuel to U.S. and global markets. According to Trump, the move is intended to help lower prices.

The U.S. Treasury Department subsequently issued a license authorizing the sale, delivery, unloading and import of Russian-origin diesel fuel through April 7, 2027.

Witkoff-Putin talks on Oct. 21

On Oct. 20, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with U.S. presidential special envoy Steve Witkoff in Oslo. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb also participated in the talks. Witkoff traveled to St. Petersburg the following day.

On Oct. 21, Witkoff and Putin held talks at Konstantinovsky Palace in St. Petersburg. Kirill Dmitriev, Putin's special envoy, also attended the meeting.

Witkoff said he had brought Putin documents outlining approaches to ending the war in Ukraine.

Putin, in turn, told the U.S. presidential envoy that Moscow was "generally ready to resume" trilateral talks around Nov. 10 on the "main issue."
