The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) used custom-built drones in Cobweb Operation, which resulted in the destruction or damage of more than 40 Russian aircraft, sources told NV on June 11.

The UAVs were specifically engineered by SBU specialists, featuring a unique design that allowed real-time remote control and the ability to bypass Russian air defenses thousands of kilometers inside enemy territory.

Sources confirmed that the drones were tailored for deep-strikes missions in Russian rear areas, adapted for the specific nature of the targets.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier confirmed that only domestically produced drones were used in the operation.

Cobweb operation

On June 1, the SBU launched Cobweb Operation - a large-scale and unprecedented strike targeting Russia’s strategic aviation assets. The following day, the SBU confirmed that the simultaneous attacks on four military airfields deep inside Russia damaged 41 aircraft, including A-50, Tu-95, Tu-22M3, and Tu-160 bombers.

The Ukrainian drones struck airfields in:

  • Olenya (Murmansk Oblast)

  • Belaya (Irkutsk Oblast)

  • Dyagilevo (Ryazan Oblast)

  • Ivanovo (Ivanovo Oblast).

The operation was in preparation for a year and a half. The SBU first smuggled FPV drones into Russia, followed by mobile wooden cabins that hid the drones in their roofs. At the right moment, the roofs were remotely opened, and the drones were launched.
