In a video address on March 26, Magyar said Fidesz has proposed a coalition with the far-right Our Homeland party, and that alliance would put Hungary on a path out of the EU.
“That proposal is also an open admission that Fidesz knows it will lose the election,” Magyar said.
“What would a Fidesz-Our Homeland coalition mean for Hungarians? My compatriots, a Fidesz-Our Homeland coalition would definitely lead Hungary toward leaving the European Union. Our Homeland’s position on this issue is clear and has not changed for a long time. If they came to power, they would leave the EU. In recent weeks Fidesz has also begun to head down this path — first hesitantly, then with increasing determination.”
Magyar said Orbán’s ties to Russia have so shaken confidence in Hungary that “the question is no longer whether we will leave the European Union, but whether the EU will leave us.”
He said the stakes in the April vote are enormous. “This will also be a referendum on whether our country will remain a member of the European Union, or whether Fidesz and Our Homeland will finally turn Hungary into a Russian puppet state,” he added.
