The purpose of the meeting is to discuss oil and gas supplies to Hungary.
When asked whether the two leaders will also discuss peace efforts regarding Russia’s war against Ukraine, Orban replied in the affirmative.
“We can hardly avoid that,” the Hungarian prime minister said.
On Nov. 25, Szabolcs Panyi, a journalist with the Hungarian outlet Direkt36, reported that Orban planned to visit Moscow on Nov. 28 to meet with Putin.
On Nov. 27, VSquare, citing its own sources, also reported the upcoming visit to the Russian capital.
Sources noted that none of Hungary’s NATO or EU partners had been informed about the trip. It was likely not coordinated with the United States either.
The outlet reported that Orban will travel with a large delegation of around ten people. This will include Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár, and national security adviser Marcell Bíró.
Earlier in November, the United States exempted Budapest from all sanctions related to the use of Russian oil and gas.
