OSINT analysts detail features of Russia’s Yolka interceptor drone used against Ukrainian UAVs

According to the manual, the drone is launched from a handheld system. Its maximum speed reaches up to 200 km/h, with a flight range of up to 1.6 kilometers and an operating altitude of up to 800 meters. The document states that an optical camera is located in the nose of the drone, allowing for automatic target acquisition.
The Yolka UAV is manufactured from low-cost components, as it is designed to be a disposable interceptor.
The manual notes that the drone performs most effectively in good visibility, from about one hour after sunrise until sunset. Use in rain is prohibited, and nighttime effectiveness drops significantly due to the lack of a night-vision camera.
The drone’s primary targets include FPV drones, bombers measuring from 30 centimeters to 2 meters, and fixed-wing UAVs. At the same time, large long-range drones are not among Yolka’s targets, and intercepting them requires launching at least three interceptors. The drone also lacks a warhead, so it neutralizes targets by ramming.
If a target moves slower than 80 km/h, interception is possible from various directions, provided the operator is within 100 to 200 meters. For faster targets, more precise timing is required: during head-on movement, the drone is launched directly at the target, while during a pass-by, it is launched along the target’s trajectory at a distance of up to 600 meters.
Among typical issues, the manual cites launcher malfunctions due to improper handling, as well as camera fogging during sharp temperature changes, which can lead to loss of target lock.
The Yolka interceptor drone was first observed in May 2025 and is primarily used against Ukrainian bomber drones and fixed-wing UAVs.
