It is also seen as a move in anticipation of potential conflicts with Iran or renewed hostilities with the Yemeni Houthis.
Recently, Hegseth indicated that European allies would need to provide increased military support to Ukraine, given the Pentagon's shifting focus towards the Western Pacific as a critical operational area.
This follows an earlier decision by Hegseth not to attend the June 4 Ramstein-format Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting.
