Poland has uncovered a Russian spy ring in the country, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak said in an interview with Polskie Radio on March 16.

Six people with foreign citizenship have been detained in Poland on suspicion of working for Russia’s special services, reported Poland’s RMF FM on March 15.

Journalists said the suspects were preparing acts of sabotage on Polish territory and monitoring shipments of Western weapons to Ukraine.

Asked whether there was a threat to Poland’s critical infrastructure from the Russian spies, Błaszczak said that “they were collecting information on those who attacked Ukraine, committed war crimes, and the threat was real.”

“I would like to emphasize the great success that the agents of the Internal Security Agency have achieved as the entire spy ring has been uncovered,” the defense minister said.

“Without a doubt, this is a proof that Polish services work for the security of our country very efficiently.”

The spies had a specific goal, said Błaszczak, without providing more details.

“There is no doubt that we’re living in a time when Russia has decided to recreate its empire,” the official said.

“It has always been a threat to Poland, regardless of whether it was white or red, or, as it is now, Putin’s.”
