A petition demanding a nationwide recount is now gathering signatures. As of June 8, more than 160,000 people had signed it.
"Given the extremely narrow margin of 369,591 votes between the two candidates in the recent presidential election, the 189,000 invalid ballots, and numerous reports of irregularities in the work of electoral commissions, we believe it is necessary to demand a full recount," the petition reads.
Electoral Commission member Ryszard Kalisz said that the Supreme Court will review the commission’s report and complaints before deciding whether the election outcome is valid.
“A meeting of the National Electoral Commission regarding the inclusion of incorrect vote counts in the protocols of some district commissions will take place on June 9, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.,” he added.
The second round of Poland’s presidential election was held on June 1. Voters chose between Rafał Trzaskowski — the candidate from Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s Civic Coalition — and Karol Nawrocki, backed by the Law and Justice (PiS) party.
In the first round, Trzaskowski led with 31.36% of the vote, while Nawrocki trailed narrowly with 29.54%. In the runoff, Nawrocki emerged victorious with 50.89%, while Trzaskowski received 49.11%.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated Nawrocki on his victory and expressed hope for continued productive cooperation with Warsaw.
Earlier, Nawrocki said in an interview with Confederation party leader Sławomir Mentzen that he opposed Ukraine joining NATO and firmly ruled out sending Polish troops into combat zones.
