Russian attack on baby food plant in Kyiv Oblast kills 4, injures 7 (UPDATED)

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at 12:37 p.m. that rescue operations at the site of the Russian strike were still ongoing, although emergency crews had already extinguished the fire.

"Russia continues its war against life itself, and everyone who helps us is truly helping defend it. Every package of support that includes anti-ballistic systems, every joint agreement on weapons production, and every sanctions step taken against Russia helps protect human lives," Zelenskyy said.

He noted that in recent days, in addition to the baby food factory, Russia had also "defeated" food warehouses and a postal service facility in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, an ambulance in Kherson, a school building in Sumy Oblast, port infrastructure in Odesa Oblast, residential buildings, and an outpatient clinic in Kharkiv Oblast.

Rescuers are still clearing debris, and officials said two more people may remain trapped under the rubble.

The number of people killed in the attack on the enterprise stands at four, Kyiv Oblast Military Administration head Mykola Kalashnyk said at 10:35 a.m. local time.

As of 11 a.m., the number of injured rose to seven, the regional administration said.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service released photos from the scene. The images show that Russian drones struck the Yahotynske for Children baby food plant, located in Zhurivka in Brovary district, Kyiv Oblast.

“The enemy attacked a peaceful civilian food industry enterprise. People who were simply doing their jobs at their workplaces at that moment,” Kalashnyk said.

An administrative building on the plant’s grounds caught fire, and some structures were partially destroyed.

Rescuers have already freed two workers from the wreckage.

“Russia is once again showing that its target is not military facilities, but ordinary people living and working on their own land,” Kalashnyk said.

According to Ukraine’s Air Force, from 6 p.m. on June 4 through the night of June 5, Russia attacked Ukraine with two Kh-59/69 guided air-launched missiles and 216 strike drones, including Shahed drones, jet-powered drones, Gerbera, Italmas, Banderol loitering munitions and Parodiya decoy drones.

As of 7:30 a.m., air defenses had shot down or jammed 198 enemy drones, the Air Force said.

“Hits by 16 strike drones were recorded at 13 locations, and downed drones or debris fell at 12 locations. The guided air-launched missiles did not reach their targets,” the Air Force said.
