Russia equips drones with specialized shaped charges to sever high-voltage pylons - NV interview

These specialized charges are engineered specifically to slice through high-voltage transmission pylons and railway bridge structural spans.
Anatoliy Khrapchynskyi, defense company development director and Air Force reserve officer, broke down the operational threat and technical mechanics in an interview on Radio NV.
"This is a fundamental change in the projectile’s warhead," Khrapchynskyi explained.
"When discussing transmission lines, their structural spans are extensive. Producing the demolition effect captured in published footage required altering the payload."
"The payload features four peripheral cutting modules which, upon detonation, effectively slice through the steel structural beams, toppling the pylon and cutting electricity supplies to an entire region," Khrapchynskyi noted.
Shift in Moscow's Targeting Strategy
Khrapchynskyi assessed that Moscow's transition to targeting transmission lines indicates mounting operational challenges against Ukraine's hardened infrastructure:
Fortified substations: The shift suggests that key distribution hubs, substations, and critical energy generation nodes have received enhanced physical shielding and fortified local air defenses.
Pursuit of regional blackouts: Facing difficulties disabling fortified transformer facilities, Russian commanders are pursuing alternative, softer targets along the power grid to induce regional electrical blackouts.
Defense complexities: Protecting every individual transmission tower across thousands of kilometers of terrain is practically impossible. However, within Ukraine's echeloned, multi-layered air defense architecture, the Air Force already models the likely targets along drone approach corridors to intercept UAVs before they reach vulnerability points.
