U.S. warns of planned Russian provocation or possible ground incursion in Poland

Washington has issued several warnings to Warsaw about Russia’s intentions. The provocations could be launched as early as the next few months.

Polish security sources suggested that Moscow’s goal would be to escalate tensions and force Western allies to suspend aid to Ukraine.

The sources added that the provocations could take the form of a drone attack on critical infrastructure, such as power stations, or simulated air strikes that will force Poland to activate its air defence systems. Officials do not exclude the possibility of “the most extreme scenario” involving a limited Russian or Belarusian armed incursion in the region.

Russia may mask the attempt as an accidental straying into Polish territory because of a GPS failure, or as a fabricated “rescue mission” to retrieve a helicopter suffering from a malfunction, The Telegraph wrote.

Moscow will count on the fact that, instead of opening fire on Russian or Belarusian soldiers in such a situation, Poland would be forced by the U.S. to negotiate with Russia or Belarus rather than respond forcefully, Polish sources stated. A scenario in which the Russians will withdraw from Poland as a result of those negotiations, rather than because they were forced to do so by military means, would be seen as a “win” from Moscow’s perspective.

An end to Western support for Ukraine could even be a central Russian demand in return for withdrawal from Poland in negotiations, the outlet noted.

One source revealed that the U.S. “systematically informs Poland” about Russian plans to attack NATO’s eastern flank. Possible provocations in a Baltic state also cannot be ruled out. A Baltic security source confirmed to The Telegraph that these plans were under discussion in Moscow.

Russia may then attempt to claim the “provocation” was carried out by Ukraine. Any ground attack by Russia could be staged either from Kaliningrad, which hosts Russian nuclear weapons, or from Belarus, the publication clarified.

Nearly 20 Russian UAVs entered Polish airspace on Sept. 10, 2025, crossing in from Ukraine and Belarus. The drones penetrated 300 kilometers into Poland. In response, NATO invoked article 4, which calls for immediate consultations among allies in the event of a perceived threat.

Russia later denied plans to attack Poland.

The Guardian, citing Western sources, reported on June 26, 2026, that Russia is preparing to stage a military provocation in the Baltic states or Poland amid increased pressure caused by Ukraine’s long-range strikes on Russian cities. The source clarified, however, that the provocations will not be a full-scale invasion, but instead will take the form of hybrid attacks, namely missiles, drones or other actions.

Lithuanian Defense Ministry stated on June 29 that it sees no signs that Russia is preparing a large-scale military attack on the Baltic states, but the risk of sabotage remains high.
