“Today we congratulate Moldova. The elections were won by the idea of Europe — the idea of normal and stable national development," he said.
"Russia’s subversive activity will not spread further into Europe.”
Zelenskyy said he had held a phone call on the morning of Sept. 29 with Moldovan President Maia Sandu.
“Russia failed to destabilize Moldova even after spending enormous resources to undermine the country and corrupt everyone it could,” he noted.
The Ukrainian president also praised Poland’s role in the extradition of former oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc to Moldova, describing him as someone who had kept the country and the region “in the shadow of dirty schemes.”
“This act of justice and European cooperation is important not only for Moldova but for all of Europe — because anyone who works against their own nation must eventually be held accountable,” Zelenskyy said.
“Every victory for Russia in our region is always a loss for Europe. That’s why we cannot afford to lose a single day or a single country. We must continue to support Moldova.”
In a post on Telegram, Zelenskyy said he had congratulated Sandu on the victory and wished her success.
“We will continue to stand with Moldova," he added.
"We will keep working together to overcome challenges and build a future in which our nations share strong security, economic, and social prospects.”
The parliamentary elections in Moldova were widely seen as crucial for the country’s pro-European course. According to the preliminary count of 99% of ballots, the pro-EU Action and Solidarity Party leads with 49.88% of the vote, while the pro-Russian Patriotic Bloc has 24.35%.
Over 1.5 million voters participated in the election, which saw some of the most intense Russian efforts in recent years to sway both the process and the outcome.
