According to him, Moscow is buying time to continue frontline offensives at least until spring 2026.

Kovalenko also recalled that Putin aide Yuri Ushakov publicly stated Russia’s disagreement with several points of the U.S.-backed peace plan.

On Dec. 7, U.S. President Donald Trump said Russia has allegedly agreed to a peace deal with Ukraine, while Ukraine’s president, in his words, “has not read” the peace plan proposals.

After that statement, news agency RBC-Ukraine, citing informed sources, reported that National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov will personally deliver amendments to the peace plan to Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Dec. 8 due to the risk of phone call wiretapping. The changes were made based on meetings between U.S. and Russian delegations in Moscow and subsequent U.S.-Ukraine discussions in Florida.

Zelenskyy later said the Donbas issue remains unresolved in the peace talks.
