Russia's May 24 Kyiv attack hit offices of Deutsche Welle, ARD and four other media outlets

"Russia's attack once again struck the infrastructure that ensures society's right to access independent information," Tomilenko said. “The NUJU is documenting crimes against journalists and media, informing international partners — the European and International Federations of Journalists, international human rights and media organizations — and insisting on an appropriate international response and accountability for Russia.”

According to the NUJU, the following media workspaces were damaged in the May 24 attack:

Deutsche Welle (DW): The blast wave damaged the Kyiv bureau's office, blowing out windows and damaging ceilings. The team was unharmed and continued working.

ARD: The German public broadcaster's Kyiv studio was damaged. Journalist Vasyl Holod reported blown-out window frames, debris and damaged equipment.

Realna Gazeta: The editorial office of this outlet, relocated from Luhansk Oblast, suffered serious destruction. Editor-in-chief Andrii Dikhtiarenko said not a single window remained intact.

UNIAN: The news agency's office sustained damage, including blown-out windows.

Graty: The blast wave damaged the office and audio studio of the independent online outlet. Editor-in-chief Tetiana Kozak reported ceiling and window damage throughout the building.

Shelter: The online media outlet's office and studio were damaged, though the team has already resumed operations.

The apartment of Ukrainian journalists Artem and Olena Zakharchenko was also damaged in the attack.

"The NUJU calls on colleagues whose offices, workspaces or homes were damaged in the Russian attack to contact the Union and the network of Journalist Solidarity Centers," Tomilenko said. “We will assist with documenting the damage and coordinating necessary support. Despite the attacks, destruction and losses, Ukrainian journalists continue to work — documenting crimes, informing the public and ensuring people's right to the truth.”

In the overnight attack on May 24, Russian forces struck Kyiv with attack drones and air-, sea- and ground-launched missiles, injuring at least 87 people and killing two.

Damage was recorded at 49 locations across the capital. Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 690 aerial weapons — 90 missiles and 600 drones of various types — between 6 p.m. on May 23 and the morning of May 24.

A market and shopping center in Kyiv's Lukyanivka microdistrict were destroyed, and the metro was temporarily shut down.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that an RS-26 Rubezh (Oreshnik) medium-range ballistic missile struck near the city of Bila Tserkva in Kyiv Oblast. He said the attack damaged approximately 300 sites across Kyiv, nearly half of them residential buildings.
