A Russian attack drone struck an apartment building in Khmelnytskyi during an overnight attack on Sept. 24, damaging windows, balconies and parked cars, regional and city authorities reported.
Khmelnytskyi Oblast had been under Russian drone attack since overnight, regional governor Serhii Tiurin said. Ukrainian air defenses were operating in the region and intercepted several aerial targets.
A drone nevertheless struck a residential high-rise in the regional capital, Tiurin said. Preliminary information indicated there were no casualties.
Khmelnytskyi Mayor Oleksandr Symchyshyn said windows were blown out and balconies and vehicles were damaged.
“All services are working to deal with the consequences,” he said.
Footage and photographs published by local authorities showed damage to the apartment building and debris around the site.
Russia attacks Ukraine with missiles and 282 drones
The strike on Khmelnytskyi came during a large-scale Russian aerial attack across Ukraine overnight into Sept. 24.
Beginning at 6 p.m. on Sept. 23, Russia attacked Ukraine with Zircon anti-ship missiles, Iskander-M/S-400/KN-23 ballistic missiles and 282 drones and other unmanned weapons, including Shahed and Gerbera drones, Banderol/Dan-T loitering munitions and Parodiya decoys, Ukraine’s Air Force reported on Sept. 24. The main directions of the attack were Kyiv Oblast and Odesa Oblast.
As of 8 a.m., Ukrainian air defenses had shot down or suppressed 227 targets, including four Zircon missiles, three ballistic missiles, one Banderol/Dan-T and 219 drones, according to the preliminary Air Force tally.
Russian weapons struck 13 locations, while debris from intercepted targets fell at another 10 locations. The attack was still ongoing when the Air Force issued its morning report.
Kyiv was hit by several waves of ballistic missiles. Two people were killed and at least eight others were injured, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported. A maternity hospital, residential buildings, warehouses and other facilities were among the sites damaged in the capital.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces launched three waves of ballistic missiles at Kyiv and that Ukrainian air defenses intercepted around 60% of them.
“I would have liked more to have been shot down,” Zelenskyy told reporters in New York. He said previous attacks this year had seen interception rates fall as low as 10% or even zero because Ukraine lacked sufficient interceptor missiles.
