A Russian drone struck the Holy Resurrection Cathedral of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine in central Sumy on Sept. 11, Sumy Oblast Governor Oleh Hryhorov reported.

“The enemy drone hit the cathedral — a symbol of the city in the heart of Sumy,” Hryhorov said. “The strike caused damage. Information on possible casualties is being clarified. All necessary services are on site, and the area is being inspected.”

The Holy Resurrection Cathedral is the oldest stone building in Sumy and a national architectural landmark. Hryhorov called the attack on such a religious site further evidence of Russia’s “cynical crimes against civilians and our cultural heritage.”

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (SES) said rescuers inspected the site and found no active fires. No reports of casualties have been received.

Photos from the scene show the drone hit the second floor of the cathedral, damaging the façade of the historic building.
