Russian strike on Kryvyi Rih injures 11, including children, leaves thousands without power

Updated at 3:59 p.m. Vilkul said explosions were heard in Kryvyi Rih as Russians again attacked infrastructure with Shahed drones. The city’s high-speed tram system has halted operations.

According to Vilkul, emergency rescue operations are underway at several locations simultaneously.

Eleven people were injured, including three children.

“Eight people have been taken to hospitals, including a 1½-year-old boy. All are in moderate condition and are receiving all necessary medical care. Two children — ages 8 and 10 — are also in moderate condition and were transported by ambulance to a children’s hospital,” Vilkul said.

As a result of the attack, a two-story residential building was heavily damaged. Private homes, administrative buildings, infrastructure facilities and a cultural institution were also damaged.

About 10,000 customers were left without electricity.

“We are trying to restart large boiler plants, but there will be a drop in the temperature of the heat carrier. The city water utility system has partially switched to generators. Water will be available, but pressure will be lower,” Vilkul warned, adding that all emergency and municipal services are working.

Overnight into Jan. 22 and in the morning, Kryvyi Rih was under attack by Russian Shahed drones.

At 10:15 a.m., Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the city’s Defense Council, said the attack had been ongoing for 10 hours.

At 11:12 a.m., he reported new explosions in the city.

“Missile attack. Ballistics,” Vilkul said, warning that “launches are possible.”

Shortly afterward, Dnipropetrovsk regional military administration head Oleksandr Hanzha said preliminary information indicated five people were injured, including a 1½-year-old boy.
