One of the victims, a 71-year-old resident of Odesa, died in the hospital following the attack, according to Odesa Oblast Governor Oleh Kiper.
The strike targeted a civilian facility of critical importance to global food security, Vice Prime Minister for Restoration Oleksiy Kuleba and Kiper said. Two ballistic missiles were used in the attack, damaging port infrastructure and destroying vehicles and equipment.
"One port worker was killed in today’s Russian strike. I extend my sincere condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones," Kiper said.
Doctors report that four of the injured are in serious condition, two are in moderate condition, and two sustained minor injuries. All are receiving medical care.
Kiper urged residents and visitors in the region not to ignore air raid alerts and to immediately seek shelter when sirens sound.
Explosions were reported in Odesa on May 23 after an air raid warning for a potential missile threat. That same day, Kiper said Russian forces attacked the Odesa district with drones. A private home in a suburb of Odesa was damaged, and one man was injured. Emergency services responded to the scene.
Russian drones also struck multiple regions of Ukraine overnight and into the morning of May 23. In Chernivtsi Oblast, a drone strike sparked a fire at a railway station. In Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, several buildings and vehicles were damaged.
In Poltava Oblast, a direct drone hit and falling debris destroyed a building belonging to a local business and triggered a fire. Power lines were damaged, leaving more than 100 commercial customers and nearly 1,800 households without electricity.
