Russian propaganda outlets are spreading false claims that the incident was allegedly a “deliberate provocation by Ukraine and some European elites” to draw NATO into confrontation with Russia.
Some sources also circulated a version suggesting that Ukraine supposedly “directed Russian drones toward Poland” using electronic warfare systems.
These assertions are untrue and are a typical tactic of Russian propaganda aimed at justifying its crimes against Ukraine’s civilian population.
“Such actions by Russia must receive a decisive response. Only new tough sanctions and increased international pressure can stop the aggressor,” Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation said.
Russian drone attack on Poland
During Russia’s massive strike on Ukraine, several drones repeatedly violated Polish airspace. Warsaw called it an “unprecedented act of aggression.”
Polish forces fired on some of the drones and confirmed several were shot down. Search operations for crash sites are ongoing, with Territorial Defense Forces involved.
Due to the aviation threat, Poland temporarily closed four airports — Warsaw Chopin, Warsaw Modlin, Rzeszów-Jasionka and Lublin. The situation is being closely monitored.
In response to the drone attacks, Poland tightened security measures and placed its Territorial Defense Forces (WOT) on emergency readiness in border regions. Soldiers in Podlaskie, Masovian, Lublin and Subcarpathian voivodeships may receive call-ups requiring reporting within six hours, while in other voivodeships the time is up to 12 hours.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened an emergency government meeting at 9 a.m. and is consulting with key defense and security ministers. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has also been briefed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attack involved at least eight Russian-Iranian strike drones that crossed into Polish and NATO airspace. He stressed that Russia’s next moves depend on a decisive and coordinated response from partners and called for joint measures to deter the aggressor and demonstrate the consequences of its actions.
