US Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shea warned that Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities could jeopardize prospects for peace negotiations, Reuters wrote on April 8.

She recalled the bloody Russian attack of Kryvyi Rih on April 4.

“We urge Russia to remember that strikes like the one on Kryvyi Rih, and the execution of prisoners of war, could harm peace efforts and any discussions dependent on them,” Shea said.

Shea highlighted that the United States “will not have patience for bad-faith negotiations or broken commitments” as Washington pursues a resolution to the war in Ukraine.

“In the end, we will judge President Putin’s commitment to a ceasefire by Russia’s actions,” she added.

Missile strike on Kryvyi Rih on April 4

On April 4, Russian forces launched a ballistic missile at a residential neighborhood in Kryvyi Rih, killing 20 people, including nine children. More than 70 others were injured.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed it hit a "gathering of Ukrainian and Western officers" at a restaurant, alleging 85 casualties. Ukraine’s General Staff dismissed the claim as false, stating that the missile used was an Iskander-M with a cluster warhead intended to maximize civilian casualties.

Commenting on the strike, US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink did not initially mention Russia’s responsibility, instead calling the attack an example of why the war must end.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized the omission, warning that failing to call out Russia emboldens the Kremlin to continue its aggression and ignore diplomacy.

Days later, on April 6, Brink expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people during a national day of mourning, acknowledging that the attack was carried out by Russia.
