Ukraine’s nuclear plants forced to cut output after massive Russian strike — IAEA

Russian [Dec. 6 - ed.] attack affected the grid and external power supply of the three operating nuclear power plants, forcing them to reduce the output of several reactors.

“The interruptions led to power output fluctuations, temporary disconnections and forced shutdowns at some units,” Grossi said.

“In several cases, units were taken offline or operated at reduced power in order to keep the grid balanced and prevent damage to equipment after sudden activation of protection systems.”

As reported earlier, at the end of November, Ukrainian-controlled nuclear power plants fully restored their output following the Russian attack on Nov. 19.

On Nov. 20, Energy Ministry reported a forced reduction in nuclear capacity due to damage to electricity transmission systems and the need for preventive measures during periods of heightened threat. The IAEA at that time confirmed that, after the Nov. 19 strike, three Ukrainian plants were forced to reduce their output and called the situation worrying.

On the night of Dec. 6, Russia attacked Ukraine with 704 drones and missiles, including Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles, Iskander ballistic missiles, and Kalibr cruise missiles. Air defence forces shot down 615 targets, the Ukrainian Air Force reported then.
