Local residents said they did not hear any air defense activity.

“Residents say there were no sounds of air defense systems operating, which means it was a direct hit,” the journalist said.

“Tragically, at least two people were killed.”

Residents also said that in the first minutes after the strike, men rushed into the entrance of the building, where a fire had broken out.

One of those who helped in the immediate aftermath was Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty journalist Marian Kushnir, who rescued a four-year-old child.

“This is not the first time he has saved civilians,” journalist Yuliia Kyriienko said.

“He previously evacuated a family with a 12-year-old girl from a frontline village where even evacuation teams no longer went.”

According to locals, the family’s apartment was a duplex. The couple was on the second floor, where the fire was already severe, making it difficult to reach them.

The main firefighting efforts have now been completed, as evidenced with the video footage from the scene.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported that a Shahed drone strike on the apartment building killed two people and injured four others, including children born in 2016 and 2021.

Overnight on Jan. 28, Russia launched Shahed drones against multiple regions of Ukraine, including Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa, and carried out a ballistic missile strike on Kryvyi Rih.
