AI-driven drone used by Russia in Sumy poses new threat

A new Russian attack drone, the V2U, used in the Sumy direction, can autonomously search and select targets using artificial intelligence, Ukraine’s military intelligence agency reported on Telegram on June 9.

Ukrainian intelligence has revealed details about the computing system used in a Russian UAV, noting that it is based on the Chinese Leetop A203 minicomputer. The central processor of the UAV is a high-speed NVIDIA Jetson Orin-based assembly.

"The V2U drone is equipped with only one GPS module, which likely indicates Russia’s refusal to use satellite navigation due to the operation of Ukrainian electronic warfare systems," the Ukrainian intelligence service stated. "Instead, the drone likely uses 'computer vision' for navigation, comparing images from its camera with pre-loaded photos of the area."

In addition, the intelligence service confirmed that the drone has the capability for FPV (first-person view) control via LTE communication.

"A Microdrive Tandem-4GS-OEM-11 modem-router has been installed, which works with a SIM card from a Ukrainian mobile operator," the intelligence service added.

Despite Russian markings, the modem’s components are of Chinese origin. Intelligence officers reported that the drone is primarily made from Chinese-manufactured parts, including the engine, GPS module, servos, solid-state drive, rangefinder, speed controllers, and batteries.

Furthermore, the HUR noted the installation of a Japanese Sony photosensitive sensor, an electromagnetic relay from Irish company Te Connectivity, and the aforementioned American Jetson Orin module.
