“Air defense systems and other weapons will be less available to Ukraine because they will be directed to Israel, our ally,” Blumenthal told Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne.
He described the war as a “major gift” to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, arguing that fighting in the Middle East diverts American attention away from Ukraine. Blumenthal also rejected what he called a false narrative of inevitable Russian victory.
“Ukraine can win if we provide the necessary assistance,” he said.
Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., offered the opposite view. He said Putin is closely watching developments in the region and suggested that successful strikes against Iran could push Russia toward negotiations.
A March 1 report by the Institute for the Study of War said Russia continues to show reluctance to actively support Iran beyond formulaic statements issued after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior officials were killed in Israeli and U.S. strikes.
Since Feb. 28, 2026, Israel and the United States have conducted coordinated strike campaigns against Iran, dubbed Operation Roar of the Lion by Israel and Operation Epic Fury by the United States. The strikes killed Khamenei, members of his family, and a number of Iranian military and political leaders.
In response, Iran has launched ballistic missiles and drones at Israel and U.S. allies in the region, including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Jordan. Strikes on U.S. military bases in those countries have also been reported.
