Russian strike on Sumy injures 74, damages school, homes, medical facilities

Russia struck the center of Sumy with a missile, targeting civilian areas, according to Sumy Oblast Military Administration head Volodymyr Artiukh.
The attack damaged several high-rise apartment buildings and a school, though children sheltering in a bunker during the strike were safely evacuated.
At 4:51 p.m., the Sumy City Council reported 74 wounded—61 adults and 13 children—while earlier, at 4:31 p.m., public broadcaster Suspilne cited the regional prosecutor’s office with 65 injured, including 14 children.
Acting Mayor Artem Kobzar initially confirmed 24 adult and four child casualties, noting hits on residential sectors and infrastructure, including pediatric medical facilities.
Artiukh said rescuers were clearing debris and assisting victims, with door-to-door checks underway in affected buildings.
At 3:44 p.m., Igor Kalchenko, chief of staff at the Sumy Oblast Military Administration, added that educational and healthcare facilities were hit, with windows and balconies shattered in residential blocks.
At 5:22 p.m., Andriy Yermak, head of the Presidential Office, shared video evidence of the aftermath, showing smoke and destruction.
The attack disrupted utilities: eight buildings lost gas, 18 lacked hot water and heating, and six had no cold water, per the city council.
