Szijjarto insists he ‘never served Russian interests’

Hungary’s outgoing foreign minister Peter Szijjarto said he “never served Russian interests” and said he is offended by allegations that he is a traitor, in an April 22 interview with local outlet Telex.

Asked whether his actions have given some Hungarians the impression that the country is drifting away from Europe and toward Vladimir Putin’s Russia, Szijjarto said he is hurt that many call him a traitor. He said his aim has been to build good relations with many countries, including Russia, not to betray Hungary.

On March 21, The Washington Post, citing unnamed sources, reported that Szijjarto regularly informed Moscow about the course of European Union meetings.
