The supply of Taurus long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine is possible, but it will require several months of training for the Ukrainian military, ZDF reported on May 28, citing German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

“Of course, it is within the realm of possibility,” he told journalists, adding that Berlin is closely coordinating with its European partners on this issue, including Britain and France, which have already supplied Ukraine with their Storm Shadow and Scalp long-range missiles.

“We have always said - I have said it myself - that the Taurus requires several months of training for Ukrainian soldiers.”

Merz has recently faced criticism from within his own party over his unclear statements on whether Germany is prepared to provide Ukraine with long-range missiles that could strike deep into Russian territory.

The uncertainty surrounding Germany's Taurus decission threatened to overshadow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Berlin on May 28.

Following the Merz-Zelenskyy meeting, the German Defense Ministry announced that the government had approved €5 billion ($5.6 billion) in military aid for Ukraine. The funds will come from existing parliamentary budgets and will focus on direct investments in Ukraine’s defense industry.
