U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order instructing the Department of the Interior to rename Lake Ontario Lake America, Reuters reported on Aug. 27.

Lake Ontario is one of North America’s five Great Lakes. It lies along the border between the Canadian province of Ontario and New York state. The claimed name change comes after trade between Washington and Ottawa collapsed, leading to new retaliatory tariffs and a rapid deterioration in relations.

“We're going to be changing the name of Lake Ontario effective immediately to Lake America,” Trump said in the Oval Office.

“The lake change, the Lake of America, was something I've been thinking about for a long time, actually.”

The president then suggested he would do the same with the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

“We have a gulf [of Mexico] and we have a lake, now all we need is an ocean, so maybe we'll have to change the name of the Atlantic and or the Pacific; maybe we'll change them both,” Trump said.
