Trump said Iran wants to strike a “very good deal” with the
United States.
“We’re negotiating right now, and they want to make a very
good deal. They’re willing to give us everything, they’re willing not to have
nuclear weapons,” Trump said.
He added that the United States would announce victory over
Iran in the coming weeks.
“I think we’re winning this battle, but you really win it
over the next two weeks, when we announce complete victory, it will be complete
victory, it will happen very soon, and oil prices will drop sharply,” Trump
said.
CNN noted that this is not the first time Trump has promised
major progress within “two weeks.” The ceasefire with Iran, announced on April
7, was initially supposed to last two weeks while both sides finalized an
agreement to end the war.
The U.S.-Israel war against Iran
On May 27, Iran’s state-run IRIB broadcaster reported on a
draft memorandum saying the “United States would end the blockade,” while
Tehran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The White House denied the Iranian
state media report and called it a “complete fabrication.”
On May 30, The New York Times, citing sources, reported that
Trump had toughened the terms of a potential deal to end the war with Iran and
sent Tehran an updated draft document.
On June 1, Iran was reported to have suspended talks with
the United States over Israeli strikes on Lebanon, saying it would not return
to dialogue until Israel halted military operations in Lebanon and Gaza.
Washington, meanwhile, said it had received no official notice from Tehran that
the talks had been suspended.
