U.S. President Donald Trump thanked Alexander Lukashenko for releasing more than 500 political prisoners and said he looks forward to meeting him at a peace council, writing on Truth Social about a March 19 meeting with a U.S. delegation.

“Thus, the total number of prisoners whom President Lukashenko has generously released since May last year has exceeded 500,” he wrote.

He said he “would like to express his sincere gratitude” to Lukashenko for this.

“I look forward to meeting him at the next Peace Council meeting,” the U.S. president added.

On March 19, Alexander Lukashenko held talks in Minsk with a delegation led by U.S. special envoy John Cole. Afterward, Lukashenko said the United States had proposed a deal to him “on various issues.” It later emerged that Belarus had released 250 political prisoners.

The Financial Times reported that Washington is considering inviting Lukashenko to meet U.S. President Donald Trump — either at the White House or at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence.
