Washington mulls sanctions on EU officials over Digital Services Act—report
Nation26 August 2025, 01:07 AM
U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration is considering
sanctions on European Union officials or member states responsible for passing
the Digital Services Act, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters on
Aug. 25.
The proposed measures, including visa restrictions, target European officials who helped write the bill, which mandates technology companies to step up moderation of their online content. U.S. tech giants and some lawmakers have criticized the law as an excessive curb on free speech.
U.S. State Department officials have yet to make a final decision, but internal meetings on the issue were held last week, one source said.
“This step would be unprecedented and could further intensify the administration’s fight against what it sees as Europe’s attempt to limit conservative voices,” a person familiar with the discussions told the journalists.
