U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth later told reporters he saw “no sense” to invoke Article 5 of the NATO treaty, while Alliance spokeswoman Allison Hart said the alliance condemns “Iran’s targeting.”
CNN noted the incident is the first time since the outbreak of the war with Iran earlier this week that NATO forces have intercepted an Iranian missile heading toward a member country.
Turkey’s Defense Ministry also said NATO air defenses shot down an Iranian missile that was moving toward the country’s airspace. Debris from the missile fell in Hatay province; there were no reported injuries or deaths.
