Fighting continues at Ukraine's strategic Zmiinyi Island, says UK intelligence

Fighting continues at Zmiinyi Island, also known as Snake Island, with Russia repeatedly trying to reinforce its exposed garrison there, the UK Ministry of Defense tweeted on May 11, referring to the latest Defense Intelligence update.

The intelligence said that Ukraine had successfully struck Russian air defenses and resupply vessels with Bayraktar TB2 armed UAV.

"Russia's resupply vessels have minimum protection in the western Black Sea, following the Russian Navy's retreat to Crimea after the loss of the (Russian warship) Moskva," reads the update.

It is noted that Russia's current efforts to augment its forces on Zmiinyi Island offer Ukraine more opportunities to engage Russian troops and destroy materiel.

"If Russia consolidates its position on Zmiinyi Island with strategic air defenses and coastal defense cruise missiles, they could dominate the north-western Black Sea," the intelligence said.

On May 8, the Ukrainian military destroyed a Russian helicopter with troops on board as it landed on Zmiinyi Island.

Ukrainian forces also destroyed two enemy Raptor-class patrol boats and a Serna-class landing craft with a Tor missile system, and damaged another Raptor-class vessel.

"46 Russian fascists from the crew and the landing forces went (to meet Davy Jones)," the Ukrainian military's Operational Command South said in a Facebook video on May 8.

On May 1, OC South reported that Ukrainian defenders, in another attack on enemy targets on Zmiinyi Island, destroyed three anti-aircraft systems, a Strela-10 surface-to-air missile system, as well as a communication vehicle – a server room with telecommunications equipment.

On May 7, the Ministry of Defense confirmed that a Russian landing boat and two Tor missile systems were hit by a Bayraktar TB2 UAV near Zmiinyi Island.
