Zelenskyy and Tusk ink security agreement in Warsaw

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk signed a bilateral security agreement in Warsaw, Zelenskyy’s office reported on its website on July 8 and posted a video of the ceremony on YouTube.

Poland agreed to consider the transfer of at least one additional MiG-29 squadron, consisting of at least 14 fighters, to Ukraine.

The agreement also allows for the interception of Russian missiles and drones in Ukrainian airspace that are fired in the direction of Poland, marking the first time such provisions have been included in bilateral security agreements.

In addition, the agreement provides for the creation of a "Ukrainian Legion," which will include the training of security and defense forces personnel in Poland. This training program will be open to Ukrainian citizens temporarily residing in Poland and other countries.

According to the Ukrainian President’s Office, the leaders also discussed defense collaboration, Ukraine's path to EU accession, the upcoming NATO summit, Poland's role in Ukraine's reconstruction efforts, trade enhancement, and humanitarian initiatives.

Ukraine has already signed bilateral security agreements with the United KingdomGermanyFrance, Denmark, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, Latvia, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Iceland, Norway, the United States, and Japan.

During the EU leaders' summit in Brussels on June 27, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also signed security agreements with the European UnionLithuania, and Estonia.
