"Belgium is preparing a new substantial aid package and a contribution to the PURL program. We also discussed the schedule for F-16 deliveries. The first aircraft will arrive this year. This kind of support for protecting our skies is what we need most right now," Zelenskyy wrote.
The Ukrainian president said he briefed the Belgian prime minister on meetings and agreements reached at the G7 summit, as well as on diplomatic efforts aimed at ending Russia's war against Ukraine. Zelenskyy stressed the importance of maintaining and increasing pressure on Russia.
The two leaders also discussed Ukraine's path toward European Union membership.
On June 18, Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken said Belgium could transfer all of its F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine once it receives F-35 aircraft.
"I will propose that the government transfer all F-16s to Ukraine in the coming years, depending on our receipt of the F-35. We have our role in protecting the skies and in NATO's nuclear mission, and we must fulfill that role," he said.
