Roman Fritz, Polish Sejm member from the far-right Confederation party, stirred controversy after comparing the Ukrainian national slogan “Slava Ukraini” (“Glory to Ukraine!”) to the Nazi exclamation “Sieg Heil” on Aug. 4.

Fritz published a video of this moment at the Sejm meeting, with his comment made in response to another MP who concluded her speech with the words “Glory to Ukraine.”

“We’ve just witnessed a disgraceful outcry — a Banderite and Nazi slogan. In the Polish Sejm," he claimed.

"Nothing like this has happened before. It’s as if someone shouted ‘Sieg Heil!’ here.”

In response, Ukrainian Ambassador to Poland Vasyl Bodnar said Kyiv received the remark with “great surprise and concern.”

“The slogan ‘Glory to Ukraine’ is a symbol of national spirit, dignity, unity, and the defense of our country,” Bodnar wrote on Facebook.

“Around the world, it is a widespread expression of support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and the heroism of its people. Today, it has become a symbol of resilience against Russian aggression and unites people globally who stand with Ukraine in its struggle.”

Bodnar reminded that both Nazi and Soviet symbols are banned by law in Ukraine, and attempts to link “Glory to Ukraine!” with extremist or fascist ideologies are both false and unjustified.

He also highlighted that freedom of expression is a cornerstone of democratic societies, but that this freedom does not extend to publicly insulting national symbols, slogans, and values that express unity and identity.

“We call for restraint in public statements, mutual respect, and avoiding actions that could harm the trust between the Ukrainian and Polish peoples,” Bodnar concluded.
