Ukraine engineers five interceptors to hunt Russian jet Shaheds — NV interview

Ukraine possesses several working prototypes of high-speed drone interceptors designed to neutralize Russian Shahed loitering munitions, but requires adequate operational lead time to test the systems and devise combat deployment tactics, he highlighted.
"Right now our engineers are actively building them; we have at least three, four, or five different variants of such rapid interceptors. However, we need time to put them through operational trials and formulate employment doctrine for the field," Beskrestnov explained.
Development of Jet Drone Interceptors
On Sept. 14, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine is speeding up the technical development and live-fire trials of a next-generation interceptor fleet tailored to hunt Russian jet-propelled Shaheds, confirming that robust financing has already been committed to the effort.
On Aug. 24, Beskrestnov cautioned on Radio NV that Ukrainian industry had not yet fielded operational jet interceptors capable of countering Russian turbojet Shahed platforms and Banderol missile-drones at scale.
Ukrainian fighter aviation and ground-based surface-to-air missile batteries now handle the brunt of intercepts against incoming Russian turbojet drones and missile-drones. Defense analysts describe this method as disproportionately expensive, though it remains the only viable operational response until mass production of high-speed drone interceptors is achieved.
On Aug. 30, Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara told reporters that Ukrainian defense enterprises have four high-potential interceptor platforms capable of downing jet Shaheds.
In early September, state defense innovation cluster Brave1 published combat footage demonstrating a classified domestic interceptor downing Russian Banderol missile-drones at a fraction of the target's manufacturing cost. In late August, the Defense Ministry codified the Alexa Spatium unmanned aerial system — a reusable, turbojet-powered high-speed interceptor engineered to destroy Shahed-136, Geran-4, and Geran-5 variants that can fly back to base if no target is engaged.
Defense industry specialists underscore that despite successful field trials, neither public nor private manufacturers have yet transitioned these advanced interceptors into large-scale serial assembly.
