Ukraine to establish multiple corps, each built around existing brigades — 3rd Assault Brigade deputy commander

“There’s currently a task set for several units, not just the 3rd Assault Brigade. Several such corps will be created. Each will be formed around a specific brigade, like ours. The 3rd Assault Brigade will serve as the base — the forming brigade. This means the corps’ command structure will be built on our key personnel, experience, and functionality,” Zhorin said during the Radio NV broadcast.

According to him, the creation of these corps is currently in a test phase, with the 3rd Assault Brigade being the first to go through the process to refine the model for broader implementation.

“We are now scaling from a brigade to a corps, and this experience will later expand from several corps to the entire army. There’s a lot of ongoing work, particularly concerning the staffing structure of these units. There are different perspectives on how they should function and various proposals for their management. The command structure, the management framework, and the bodies that will operate within these corps — all this is still being finalized,” Zhorin explained.

He added that Ukraine’s General Staff is supportive of these initiatives as the 3rd Assault Brigade transitions into a corps.

“There’s a sense that there’s an understanding this needs to be done. They are often cooperative, sometimes advising or assisting. This is a pioneering process, and we are now creating something that will later be scaled across the entire Ukrainian army,” Zhorin said.

On Feb. 3, President Zelenskyy announced that a plan to transition the Armed Forces to a new organizational structure involving corps creation had been approved.

On March 13, the 3rd Assault Brigade announced it had officially become the 3rd Army Corps under the command of Andrii Biletskyi.

On March 16, while commenting on the appointment of Andrii Hnatov as Chief of Ukraine’s General Staff, Zelenskyy stated that one of Hnatov’s key tasks would be actively developing the corps system.
