Ukraine integrates robotic combat units into its frontline brigades

This marks a major step toward integrating robotic technology into Ukraine's military strategy.

"We are increasing the production of these systems and deploying fully robotic units within combat brigades of the Armed Forces on the front line," Umerov said.

Unmanned ground complexes have proven their ability to perform various combat tasks, including:

• Conducting offensive and defensive operations
• Providing logistical support to units
• Evacuating the wounded from the battlefield
• Mining and demining territories.

Defense Minister specified that the robotic units creation in the Ukrainian army is based on the experience of brigades that have already used them in combat.

"It is crucial that the primary suppliers of ground robotic complexes are leading domestic companies," he emphasized.

"Ukrainian manufacturers have adapted their products to modern warfare conditions and the recommendations of combat units within the Defense Forces."

Ukrainian combat technology on the frontline

On November 2, 2024, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense codified and approved for military use the Tavria combat module — a remotely operated turret equipped with two machine guns, one of which is a heavy-caliber weapon. Ukrainian officers say the system can lock onto and track targets, as well as fire accurately at moving objects both during the day and at night.

On Dec. 21, the ministry approved the domestically produced Wolly remote-controlled combat module for use in Defense Forces units. Officials highlighted Wolly's relatively light weight, allowing a single soldier to carry it to deployment points. Its battery charge lasts for several days of operation.

On Jan. 30, the Defense Ministry announced the introduction of the Zmii unmanned ground complex, designed for logistics and evacuation tasks. The robot features ballistic and anti-mine protection.

On Jan. 31, the ministry approved the Hromyla unmanned aerial system for use by Ukrainian forces. The drone is designed to engage enemy personnel, military equipment, and field fortifications.

On Feb. 4, the Defense Ministry codified and approved the Himli ground robotic complex. This system will assist in evacuating and transporting personnel, delivering ammunition and supplies, and performing other critical military tasks.
