Troops from Ukraine's 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade, named after the Knights of the Winter Campaign, successfully stopped a Russian attempt to break through near Toretsk in Donetsk Oblast, Ukrainian military command Khortytsia reported on Tuesday, March 18.

"Tank in a ditch, drone battles, and infantry destroyed: Ukraine’s defenders are wiping out the enemy near Toretsk," the military said in a statement.

According to the report, Russian forces continue using their familiar tactic—sending armored vehicles loaded with infantry into battle. However, their latest attempt ended in failure: one tank fell into a ditch, and the Russian infantry scattered chaotically, desperately calling for backup.

"Additionally, UAV operators from Kurt&Company disabled the antennas of enemy drone operators. Some tried to retaliate with Mavic drones, but without success," the Ukrainian military added.

Toretsk frontline situation

On Jan. 28, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that Russian forces had made some advances around Kurakhove, Toretsk, and central Chasiv Yar. However, Ukrainian forces managed to push the invaders back in some parts of Toretsk.

Yevhen Alkhimov, spokesperson for Ukraine’s 28th Brigade, said on Jan. 30 that there was no clearly defined frontline in the urban areas of Toretsk, with Russian forces regularly building up troops and launching assaults.

In a Feb. 22 report, ISW analysts noted Russian forces continued their offensive around Toretsk and Velyka Novosilka, but failed to make meaningful progress.

On Feb. 27, Ukraine’s 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade "Kholodnyi Yar" stated Russian troops were persistently attempting daily advances deeper into Toretsk.

However, the ISW reported on March 1 that Ukrainian defense forces had managed to achieve gains near Toretsk.
