Ukrainian energy workers showcase devastation after Russian strikes - video

On Christmas Eve, Ukrainian energy workers shared a powerful message, showcasing the extensive damage inflicted on the energy grid by recent Russian attacks.

Despite relentless attacks aimed at plunging Ukraine into darkness and cold, the resilience and dedication of the country's energy teams continue to thwart these efforts. Operating almost non-stop, repair crews work tirelessly across all oblasts, even traveling to assist colleagues in harder-hit areas to maintain the integrity of the unified energy system.

Field repair team leader Volodymyr Somyk noted that workers are pushing themselves to their limits, spending long stretches away from home as they move from substation to substation.

Substation chief Oleksandr Vovchak emphasized the incredible complexity of restoring damaged equipment in such short time frames.

Ukrenergo’s statement underlined that Russian forces deliberately target critical infrastructure to maximize damage.

However, Ukrainian energy workers remain steadfast, vowing to rebuild and restore everything that has been destroyed.

Russia’s mass Strikes on Dec. 13

On the night of Dec. 13, Russia launched a combined assault involving dozens of drones and missiles. Targets included ballistic and cruise missiles, such as Kalibr and Kh-101, as well as Kinzhal missiles fired from MiG-31K aircraft. Explosions were reported in Odesa, Lviv, and Ivano-Frankivsk oblasts.

Ukraine’s Air Force reported intercepting 81 missiles and 80 drones out of 287 aerial threats detected during the attack. Energy facilities, particularly thermal power plants, bore the brunt of the strikes, with five of Ukraine's nine nuclear reactors forced to reduce output.

Officials highlighted that the attacks aimed to disrupt Ukraine's interconnected energy system with Europe, targeting cross-border energy infrastructure to hinder import and export capabilities.

Despite this, the determination of Ukraine’s energy workers continues to outshine the darkness.
